Case in Point: How Deloitte Singapore provides an array of choices for better health

Recognising the power of personal choice in achieving and sustaining health in physical, mental, financial, and social aspects, Deloitte Singapore sought to provide Empowered Wellbeing for employees by providing the support and tools for them to make better choices. This method allows employees to personalise their wellness experiences in a way that is aligned to their own mind, body, and sense of purpose.

Wellness Fridays include a range of physical activities and other forms of recreation, from kickboxing and yoga to leather crafting and baking. Together with incorporated mental health talks and regular check-ins, these ensure a holistic experience for employee wellbeing. Friendly competition is another element to these, as the Deloitte Recreational Club spearheads an annual Inter-departmental Games for the workforce.

Supplementing these on-ground efforts, Deloitte Singapore introduced the PUML Better Health app for employees to engage in a daily step challenge with colleagues, a simple yet effective means of enhancing their fitness levels. The company’s own monthly staff magazine, SG InTouch, also includes lifestyle tips on stress management, nutrition, and mental health to provide constant access and information support to workforce wellbeing.

Team leaders at Deloitte Singapore also undergo an awareness programme on mental wellbeing, equipping them to better support their team members via regular check-ins. In addition, employee health insurance now covers visits to psychological professionals, while the company itself offers around-the-clock access to professional counselling not just for members of the workforce, but also for their immediate families.

Further supporting employees’ relations with their families, events like Kidz@Deloitte and Eat@Deloite allow them to spend more time with their families whether by taking their little ones to work or through mandatory time off. There is also a special Working Parent Community (WPC) programme to provide additional support to employees juggling both career and family through practical resources, curated content, and a vibrant community network.

In just one year, the company’s Global Talent Experience Survey revealed an over 10% increase in how people felt supported in their mental health, as well as their confidence that Deloitte would support them if they encountered challenges or struggles in mental health.

Describing key learnings from Empowered Wellbeing in Deloitte Singapore, Denise Balhetchet, Senior Executive for Talent Experience, pointed out, “A holistic approach in terms of policies, support and engagement programmes is needed,” and that “wellbeing goes beyond physical health, and it is important to take into account mental health as well.”

Tax & Legal staff participant Nur Fadhilah Abdul Hamid also shared: “I highly recommend these activities and am thankful that Deloitte goes the extra mile to ensure that we are physically, mentally and emotionally well!”
