HR Tech Update: Supporting migrant and gig workers with technology

Southeast Asia’s economies rely heavily on migrant and gig workers, from delivery riders and domestic helpers to project-based professionals in creative and tech industries. Yet, this vital segment of the workforce often faces barriers such as lack of access to benefits, inconsistent pay, and limited communication with employers. Technology is playing an increasingly important role in bridging these gaps.

Mobile-first HR solutions and digital platforms are allowing employers to better connect with this workforce. From providing simplified payroll systems to offering access to health and wellness benefits, technology ensures flexibility and inclusion for workers who are traditionally underserved. For many, their smartphone is their primary work tool, making intuitive and multilingual platforms essential.

Tech solutions bridging the gap

Several Southeast Asian companies are leading in this space. In Indonesia, GajiGesa offers earned wage access solutions, enabling gig and migrant workers to access their pay when they need it most, reducing reliance on informal lending. In the Philippines, MyKuya connects gig workers with businesses and individuals, while also providing transparent job matching and income tracking. Singapore-based Honestbee (before its closure) demonstrated how gig platforms could integrate scheduling, payroll, and support features directly into one app, a model that other startups continue to refine.

For HR teams and employers, these innovations reduce administrative burdens while creating a more reliable and motivated workforce. More importantly, they give workers dignity and security, ensuring that flexibility doesn’t come at the cost of stability.

As gig work and cross-border employment continue to grow, companies that leverage HR tech solutions will be better positioned to create inclusive, equitable workplaces that work for everyone.
