The Singapore government will extend the length of paternity leave available for working fathers. This will rise from two weeks to four weeks for eligible working fathers of Singaporean children, born from January 1 next year.
“We want paternal involvement to be the norm in our society and we will stand behind all our fathers who want to play a bigger role in raising our children,” Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said as part of his Budget 2023 speech.
The extra two weeks will be given on a voluntary basis, and employers who grant the additional leave days will be reimbursed by the government.
Wong added that the measure would become mandatory at a later date, after giving employers time to adjust to the measure.
