Smartfren Telecom strategy to redefine job roles and functions took toll

Smartfren Telecom, a prominent telecommunications company in Indonesia, has undertaken several strategic initiatives, benchmarking, and performance improvements for the company. This includes redefinition of job roles and functions to enhance competitiveness.

Gisela Lesmana, Director of Investor Relations & Media at Smartfren, said it aligns with industry trends that demand constant transformation to support business sustainability.

The new strategy is potentially affecting over 300 employees, with 100 of them having been laid off in August. Smarttelecom will continue to make an adjustment until the end of the year.

Despite being protested over labor rights and adherence to regulatory standards, Smartfren Telecom, in a press release clarified that the layoffs were part of a broader strategy aimed at optimizing business operations and competitiveness.

In response to concerns and differences of opinion among employees, Gisela emphasized the company’s commitment to mediate disputes in accordance with established mechanisms and regulations. She further stated that Smartfren had engaged in dialogue with affected employees to facilitate a resolution.The controversy surrounding Smartfren Telecom’s mass layoffs underscores the complex challenges faced by companies in Southeast Asia as they navigate evolving labor dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and the imperative of balancing economic objectives with the welfare of their workforce.
