In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business landscape, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face a myriad of challenges, including technological advancements and competitive market pressures. But most of all, SMEs often operate with limited resources when it comes to their most prized asset — human resources.
This is exactly why there is a need to make employment easier and more streamlined, from attracting and retaining top talent, to ensuring efficient payroll processes.
Championing Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA)
In Singapore, the government is actively promoting flexible work arrangements (FWA) to enhance work-life balance and support diverse workforce needs. The Ministry of Manpower’s recent guidelines highlight three pillars of flexible work: time, location, and workload. These pillars aim to give employees greater autonomy over their work schedules, locations, and responsibilities, ultimately leading to improved productivity and well-being.
Employment Hero recognises the importance of embracing FWA for modern businesses. Our internal data shows that 68% of our Singaporean team members have experienced enhanced mental well-being and productivity due to flexible and remote working arrangements. Furthermore, 82% of employees reported that reduced commuting time and associated stress positively impacted their personal lives and well-being. More than attracting and retaining talent, FWA also fosters a healthier, more engaged workforce.
A Sneak Preview of SmartMatch
A more engaged workforce also underscores the need to change how the right talents are recruited. Traditional methods often lead to mismatches and lengthy hiring processes. In Southeast Asia’s competitive job market, finding the right talent is increasingly challenging. Employment Hero’s upcoming launch of SmartMatch, our innovative recruitment solution, aims to tackle this head-on.
SmartMatch addresses these challenges by leveraging advanced algorithms and AI to match the right candidates with the right roles. This tool eliminates traditional recruitment stages such as writing job descriptions, placing ads, and sifting through numerous CVs. Instead, SmartMatch conducts interviews and assessments within the Employment Hero platform, facilitating quick, compliant hiring, even for last-minute shifts.
Built into Employment Hero’s HRIS platform and powered by our consumer superapp, Swag, SmartMatch facilitates proactive and predictive hiring by analysing an SME’s organisational chart and predicting hiring needs based on sector, size, location, and seasonal trends. This approach marks the end of the ‘pay and pray’ recruitment model, ensuring a continuous, pre-vetted talent pipeline.
Job seekers using SmartMatch through the Swag app can bypass traditional application processes and be automatically matched with employers. Our AI analyses skills, career goals, and job preferences to align candidates with roles they might not have considered, catering to diverse work preferences including local, remote, and hybrid roles.
The beta version of SmartMatch is due to be in the market by the end of June, with continuous optimisation and testing leading to a full launch in the second half of the year. This phased rollout will allow us to refine the tool based on real-world feedback, improving its effectiveness and user-friendliness over time.
The Power of Automated Payroll
Payroll processing is critical yet complex for businesses. In Southeast Asia, many SMEs struggle with manual payroll processes that are time-consuming and prone to errors. Our recent report highlights that a significant portion of payroll providers in Singapore (52%) and Malaysia (51%) automate only 31-60% of their payroll services. This indicates a substantial opportunity for improvement through increased automation.
For instance, automated payroll solutions like Employment Hero significantly reduces the time and effort required to manage payroll, allowing businesses to focus on strategic growth initiatives. Our platform ensures compliance with local regulations, mitigates the risk of errors, and provides a centralised location for employee records, enhancing accuracy and reliability.
Moreover, 71% of payroll providers in Singapore and 78% in Malaysia believe that the use of AI and automation in payroll will increase within their organisations over the next 12 months. This growing trend underscores the importance of adopting advanced payroll systems to stay competitive and efficient in today’s business environment.
Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG)
To support SMEs in their digital transformation journey, the Singapore government offers the Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG). This initiative enables businesses to invest in advanced HR technology without financial burden, thereby enhancing efficiency and productivity.
As an approved PSG vendor, we have been successful in enabling our customers to achieve significant time savings and cost reductions, allowing them to focus on growing their businesses and better supporting their employees.
By offsetting the cost of adopting digital solutions like ours and therefore enhancing their HR and payroll processes, businesses have achieved at least a 15% increase in productivity.
Industry trends in HR and employment have continuously evolved over the past few years. Beyond championing FWAs and introducing cutting-edge recruitment and payroll technologies, Employment Hero is dedicated to understanding these trends and helping businesses navigate the complexities of today’s work environment. Our ultimate goal is to enhance the employment experience, enabling SMEs to thrive and achieve sustainable growth in the competitive Southeast Asian market.
