Case in Point: How Carlsberg Malaysia infuses DEI into company culture

In the depths of the pandemic, Carlsberg Malaysia recognised just how crucial it was to operate with a diverse workforce. Thus, Managing Director Stefano Clini aimed to revive the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy and embody this at the top of all employees’ minds.

In 2023, the company launched “Welcome YOU,” signifying a stronger commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels included, heard, and welcomed to be their authentic selves at work.

Welcome YOU includes regular workshops and learning sessions focused on DEI, such as inclusive leadership and unconscious bias. To date, 63% of the management team at Carlsberg Malaysia are female, shooting up from 25% in 2016. There is also a DEI referral program in place, incentivising employees who successfully hire female candidates. Meanwhile, unconscious bias aids in addressing underlying stereotypes and prejudices that may stem from the country’s incredibly diverse demography.

This powerful initiative is also at the backbone of major cultural celebrations, employee resource groups (ERGs) like the single parent community, and even the implementation of flexible work arrangements to accommodate physical limitations as well as changing phases of life for employees. Welcome YOU further influences the Carlsberg Malaysia workplace, with facilities provided for those with special needs as well as for expectant mothers.

Material Planning Manager Ong Tze Chieh described this DEI culture as, “Promoting fair treatment and ensuring equal access to opportunities while working to eliminate any barriers that limit the potential of diverse participants. It is about ensuring that every individual has a genuinely equal opportunity to make the most of their ability and talents.”

Meanwhile, HR Director Pauline Lim shared, “Our leaders cultivate a performance-based culture that ensures current success as well as nurturing of the future by fostering inclusivity in the workplace and cultivating a strong pool of future leaders.”
