CNN Philippines’ Jane Santos: mutual respect makes teamwork easy

Jane C. Santos, Assistant Vice President for Technical Services at CNN Philippines, says the people she works with are the best part of leading her department at the news organisation. She tells Chief of Staff Asia what it is like to work at a major global news brand, her aspirations for her team, and what she looks for in a future staff.

COS Asia: How important is work flexibility in your company? What’s your current work arrangement in the post-pandemic era?

Santos: Some departments in CNN Philippines still work with a hybrid setup; some days, they work from home, and other times they are in the office. Most of us working in news operations report to the office every day.

COS Asia: What are the best things about working at CNN Philippines?

Santos: I like the people. We’re a team. Work becomes easy because we respect each other. And every day, I learn from the people I work with. I learn things I might not have considered would have an impact on my life and career, but that ultimately allow me to expand my limits beyond my comfort zone.

Working for CNN Philippines has opened up many opportunities to learn from the best people in the news industry, both locally and internationally. The exposure, support, and knowledge that CNN has shared with us have been great.

COS Asia: What do you look for in a future staff member?

Santos: I want someone in my team to be competent but willing to learn. One can learn technical knowledge and aptitude, but being resilient and a team player can carry a person far.

COS Asia: What are your priorities and aspirations for your team?

Santos: I want them to grow. I want them to have fulfilling careers. I want them to feel rewarded for their efforts and contributions to the company. Technology is ever-evolving, and I want every opportunity for the team to grow their skills, stay updated, and get equipped for their craft.
