When Trust Bank recognised the need for continuous improvement and innovation for their customers, the company realised there had to be changes as well in the way their employees worked. This aligns with the bank’s core value of constant improvement by empowering employees to spearhead a heightened client experience and providing a work environment that allows employees to love and enjoy their work.
In December 2023, Trust Bank held its first Hackathon, essentially a gathering of healthy competition where employees are encouraged to bring forward their innovative ideas. Approximately 70 employees formed different teams and formulated ideas to improve the bank’s services, such as using generative AI and automation to make better use of their existing tools and data. The Hackathon includes the pitching of ideas to a judging panel, which includes top executives, department heads, and partners of Trust Bank. In addition, teams need to win votes from the “audience” or spectators of the Hackathon.
The program allowed for the emergence of two winning ideas, “Code Conduits” and “TrustPea.” Code Conduits promotes data-driven decisions using large language models, while Trust Pea presents a more streamlined approach to data storage with the end goal being a deeper understanding of whether the company’s marketing campaigns are yielding the desired results.
With the latest participants numbering about half of Trust Bank Singapore, the Hackathon allows for a demonstration of company culture where there is great collaboration and innovation nurtured by openness of top management in listening to and investing in the ideas of its people.
Trust Bank will be rewarding the winning teams by ensuring their ideas do not remain on paper. Rather, the company will be taking them to the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024, one of the world’s largest technology conferences. Such will remain as incentives to continuously foster problem-solving and maximisation of digital tools and resources within the company, addressing not only client-facing issues but also employees’ own workflow so they themselves can create their ideal work environment.
Product Leader Jason Teo, one of the participants (not from a winning team), wrote, “That shows the kind of culture we have—everyone wants to improve. I’m excited to see what great ideas my colleagues at Trust Bank Singapore come up with going forward!”
Stewart Gray, Agile Coach, also commented: “The ideas and energy generated by the teams were an inspiration to us all and a great reminder of the opportunities we have for continuous improvement. This is essential for us to be able to deliver the sort of customer experience we aim to and to create an environment that our teams love to work in.”
