Rudolf Tjandra sought firstly to maintain employee morale during covid-19, which struck two years after he stepped in as CEO. In addition to implementing remote work, Sasa provided masks, vitamins, and even ginger water to employees in order to help safeguard their and their families’ wellbeing. His strategy was also to remind workers at Sasa to exercise a positive outlook and concern for others in the community. Staying level headed and productive would help ensure that they would not be overcome by hopelessness, he shared.
Describing his leadership style to business portal SWA Online, Tjandra shared about intense communication. He creates videos to be played in Sasa factories, publishes articles and commentaries, sends out statements for staff, and holds regular Zoom meetings. Through these, he strives to maintain a strong sense of attachment and collaboration.
“What we are able to achieve is achieved because we have made sure that our people are well-led, appreciated and given the opportunity to continue to learn and excel,” he wrote in 2021. It follows that Tjandra has a deep appreciation for HR’s role in maintaining the right culture of “Sasa CARE:” courage, action, respect, and enthusiasm. Employees vouch for Sasa’s empowering environment, where they garner opportunities to gain knowledge and leadership experience alongside supportive teammates.
These are reflective of Tjandra’s service-driven and empowering concept of leadership, wherein staff engagement is just as important as consumer satisfaction.
