Jennie’s journey in HR has always been about finding better ways to support people and build thriving workplace cultures. With over 20 years of experience across diverse industries, her holistic approach to HR is defined by empathy, strategic thinking, and adaptability. “My journey to becoming the Head of Human Resources at the Canadian International School in Singapore has been both challenging and rewarding,” Jennie shares. Her passion for people and organisational development has been the driving force behind her success.
Her wide-ranging experience has given her a unique insight into different workplace cultures. “In Education, the focus is on fostering a collaborative and nurturing environment, while in Media and F&B, agility and creativity are key. This versatility has enabled me to implement best practices from one sector to another, fostering innovation and efficiency,” she explains.
Jennie’s ability to adapt to different industries is a testament to her leadership. Her expertise in managing HR in various countries—Singapore, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and India—reflects her versatility. “Each country has its unique regulatory landscape and cultural nuances. For instance, in Singapore, compliance with employment regulations is paramount, while in India, managing a diverse workforce with varying expectations requires a tailored approach,” she adds.
Prioritising Employee Well-Being
“Enhancing employee well-being and retention is a priority in my various roles,” Jennie reveals. At the Canadian International School, employee well-being is embedded in the HR strategy. One successful initiative is “Wellbeing@Work,” which includes providing massage chairs for staff and dedicating a full week to activities promoting wellness. “This initiative has led to positive staff survey results and improved employee retention,” she proudly notes.
But it doesn’t stop there. Jennie has consistently advocated for flexible work arrangements, comprehensive health and wellness programs, and continuous learning opportunities. These initiatives have resulted in higher employee satisfaction and retention rates across her previous roles. Jennie’s innovative HR strategies are a reflection of her commitment to building positive work cultures and driving organisational success.
Judging the 2024 HR Star Awards
Jennie’s expertise hasn’t gone unnoticed. Her recognition as a judge for the 2024 HR Star Awards further solidifies her position as a leader in HR. Reflecting on her journey, she highlights a significant milestone: “Winning the Best HR Leader award in the HR Stars Awards 2023 has been a significant milestone. It has not only validated my efforts but also inspired me to innovate further in HR practices.”
As a judge, Jennie will continue to influence the HR community by recognizing innovation and excellence in the field. “HR will evolve to become more data-driven and strategic,” Jennie envisions. She sees HR professionals as key partners in innovation, diversity, and sustainability efforts. “With the continuous pursuit of education and technological advancements, HR will play a pivotal role in shaping organisational culture and driving business success.”
