Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has commenced its third worldwide layoff round, risking technology jobs in Singapore.
This streamlining effort, dubbed as ‘year of efficiency’, follows a substantial hiring increase during the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the return to normality has led to a decrease in e-commerce ad revenue, contributing to job cuts.
Previously, Meta axed approximately 11,000 jobs globally in November 2022, with 50 from Singapore.
The firm announced in March 2023 another 10,000 jobs would be lost this year.
A second wave of layoffs occurred in April 2023, affecting an undisclosed number of Singaporean employees, some of whom were surprisingly terminated shortly after receiving promotions.
In this latest round, non-coding roles, spanning marketing to design, appear most vulnerable.
Although the exact number of Singapore jobs under threat remains unclear, no position seems entirely secure amidst the company’s shifting priorities towards artificial intelligence and the metaverse.
