Minister emphasises business and industry role in reducing Indonesian unemployment

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Muhadjir Effendy, stressed the strategic role of the business and industry sectors in reducing the unemployment rate during an International Workers’ Day commemoration event in Jakarta on May 1, 2023.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data revealed a 5.86 percent open unemployment rate in 2022, down 0.63 percent from 2021.

Effendy credited Indonesia’s strong investment performance and the government’s industrial downstreaming policy for the decline in unemployment.

The policy, he said, has optimised natural resource use and helped develop a skilled workforce in areas previously lacking.

The minister also called for enhanced cooperation between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) to support the country’s 3.6 million new workers annually, aiming for a productive, skilled, and employed workforce.
