Recognising the significance of mental health in the workplace, MOM’s new initiative aims to ensure that every company, regardless of size or industry, has designated individuals who are dedicated to promoting mental wellness among their colleagues. These champions will act as advocates for mental health, encouraging dialogue, and providing resources for employees in need.
The move comes in response to a growing awareness of the impact of mental health on productivity and overall workplace dynamics. Studies have shown that employees who feel supported in their mental health are more likely to be engaged, satisfied, and productive in their roles. Conversely, neglecting mental health concerns can lead to absenteeism, reduced performance, and increased employee turnover.
The role of mental wellbeing champions will encompass various responsibilities, including organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns about mental health issues. They will also be the point of contact for employees seeking help or guidance regarding mental health concerns, ensuring that they have access to appropriate resources and support systems.
In a statement, Minister of Manpower, Mr. Tan Wei Ming, emphasized the significance of the initiative, saying, “We must prioritize the mental well-being of our workforce, as it directly impacts the overall productivity and success of our businesses. By establishing mental wellbeing champions in every workplace, we aim to create a culture that openly discusses and supports mental health, ultimately fostering a healthier and happier workforce.”
The ministry has also collaborated with mental health experts to develop training programs for these champions, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and knowledge to handle sensitive issues effectively. The comprehensive training will enable them to identify early warning signs of mental health struggles and provide appropriate support and resources.
The MOM’s initiative has been well-received by various employers’ associations and business leaders, who have lauded the move as a proactive step towards promoting a positive work environment. Many companies have already begun the process of appointing mental wellbeing champions, recognizing the positive impact it can have on their workforce.
