Skills mismatch a continuing problem in Malaysia, expert says

The president of the Malaysian Employers Federation Syed Hussain Syed Husman has said that skills mismatch remains an ongoing problem in Malaysia, where graduates with degrees do not have enough expertise to work within Malaysia’s most important industries.

“The next government needs to focus and improve on the relevance of skills development and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) systems through industry-led learning models, including the establishment of sector-specific skills councils and the adoption of apprenticeship programmes by relevant industries,” Syed Hussain said.

Speaking to The New Strait Times, he said that there was also a need to further enhance TVET among school leavers as the programme helped prepare students with specific skills for specific jobs.

“This makes them more employable, as they are equipped with the right skills, giving TVET graduates an advantage in the job market compared with fresh academic graduates,” he added.
