Smart Communications, one of the major telecommunications and internet providers in the Philippines, has had its main office shut down on February 27, 2023.
The Makati City government, where the main office was located, issued a closure order against the company’s office, for allegedly operating without a business permit since 2019.
“We assure the public that our services will remain available and accessible to our subscribers,” Smart said in a statement, as many worried about how this could affect their internet and celphone connections.
Smart is wholly-owned by PLDT, the Philippines’ largest telecommunications company.
It is considered one of the two firms that make up the duopoly of internet service providers in the Philippines, along with rival company Globe.
