The First Word: Elevating efficiency through modern agreement management

Across the Asia Pacific, agreement management is undergoing a shift that’s reshaping how organisations operate, compete and scale. As business conditions grow more complex, driven by shifting regulations, rising compliance demands and digital acceleration, managing agreements efficiently has become critical. In fact, 77% of leaders in high-performing organisations credit agreement management with driving success in core business areas. Yet, despite its growing impact, only 16% of businesses have fully automated contract creation, pointing to a significant gap between strategic importance and operational maturity.

Traditionally viewed as back-office tasks across various functions, agreement processes have now emerged as a strategic lever for business efficiency and impact. This shift is especially critical in HR, where the function is evolving rapidly, improving employee engagement and experience, as well as improving the productivity and efficiency of HR service delivery teams. Yet despite global momentum, many markets still lag behind, missing out on untapped efficiencies and potential. For HR teams, this puts agreement management firmly on the strategic agenda, not just to streamline workflows, but to unlock measurable impact across the business.

Transforming HR Processes Through Smart Agreement Management

Human Resources has emerged as a key line of business where modern agreement management systems can have a significant impact. From onboarding and employee experience to service delivery, these systems are helping teams operate more efficiently and effectively. According to a new report by Docusign and Deloitte, – 70% of HR leaders report measurable improvements across the employee lifecycle after modernising their agreement process.

Advanced agreement management systems are fundamentally reshaping the hiring and onboarding experience, making it noticeably smoother for everyone involved. New hires can now spend up to 33% less time buried in paperwork, freeing them up to focus on what truly matters – their new role and building stronger team relations. This remarkable efficiency stems from automating everything from contract creation to approvals, allowing HR teams to move with speed and confidence while maintaining compliance. In fact, HR departments that embrace automated contract creation are 2.7 times more likely to surpass their productivity and engagement goals.

These aren’t just one-time gains. These efficiencies ripple through ongoing employee management, improving service delivery and, crucially, empowering HR teams to step away from administrative tasks and dedicate their valuable time to people-centric initiatives.

The Regional Maturity Gap: How Singapore Can Close the Distance

Singapore’s foundations are solid, but now it’s time to build for what’s next. Across the Asia Pacific region, agreement management practices reveal a spectrum of digital maturity, shaped by different market dynamics and priorities. A clear divergence has been highlighted in how the markets are progressing. Singapore stands out in areas such as trust and digital governance, with 89% of business leaders expressing confidence in their systems. Yet, while the groundwork is there, markets like ANZ and Japan are advancing faster in AI-enabled capabilities, reporting 21% more likely to incorporate advanced analytic capabilities and 27% more likely to have enterprise integrations. Capabilities that are evolving into essential pillars for HR automation and efficiency.

For Singapore, this marks an open door. With a strong regulatory framework already in place, the country is well-positioned to scale smarter and faster. The baseline of trust sets the stage for successful adoption of AI and automation, especially as governance and data privacy remain key concerns in any digital transformation. By implementing AI and automation into agreement management, HR teams can shift from manual-heavy processes to drive strategic, people-first outcomes. These changes would lead to faster workflows, improved accuracy and more empowered decision-making.

Putting Opportunity Into Practice

While Singapore may trail regional peers in advanced agreement capabilities, some local organisations are already proving what’s possible when they make the shift. Take international restaurant chain Guzman y Gomez (GYG) for instance. As the Australia-based restaurant scaled its presence in Singapore, it faced rising operational demands, including a surge in lease and employment agreements. Previously reliant on manual, paper-based processes, GYG encountered delays, errors and inefficiencies, especially when last-minute changes were needed in contracts.

Recognising the need for change, the team partnered up with Docusign, shifting to integrated digital systems that streamlined communication, reduced administrative burden, and cut down on its paperwork. Though the team faced some initial challenges internally, the pandemic accelerated adoption, proving the value of digital-first operations. Beyond operational efficiency, the change also had a positive impact on employees. With personalised contracts accessible anytime, staff gained more confidence and clarity, with concerns around paperwork handling also addressed. Guzman Y Gomez’s journey is a clear sign to businesses in Singapore. With the right tools, digital transformation in agreement management isn’t just achievable, it’s already taking place and delivering real results for HR and the workforce alike.

The Strategic Importance for HR leaders

In today’s AI-driven business landscape, digitalisation and automation in HR are no longer optional but crucial for organisations aiming to remain competitive and agile. As HR functions continue to evolve, smart agreement management emerges as a critical enabler of efficiency, compliance and enhanced employee experience.

Bridging the digital maturity gap within the Asia Pacific is key to unlocking greater HR performance and scalability. By embracing advanced technologies such as AI-powered automation and enterprise integration, organisations can not only streamline routine processes but also elevate HR’s strategic role in attracting, engaging and retaining top talent. Ultimately, investing in digital transformation across HR agreement workflows paves the way for sustainable growth and long-term value creation, empowering businesses to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-paced market.
