Singapore’s workers unions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to drive better wages and work prospects for employees through the Job Security Council (JSC).
The MOU was signed between the National Trades Union Congress’ (NTUC) Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF).
Managed by e2i and established in 2020, the JSC aims to minimise the impact of retrenchments on workers by helping them find quality jobs quickly. The council also seeks to create an ecosystem of hiring and releasing employers in a bid to preemptively shorten the unemployment period for workers.
Through the renewed commitment of e21i and SNEF, the JSC will transform beyond placement and shift towards building up capabilities towards higher productivity. E2i will also develop and institutionalise the “Lift of Place” model, drawing from learnings and experiences during the pandemic.
The partnership will help match workers with good job opportunities in SNEF-member companies in both good and poor economic conditions. It will also upskill the workforce to seize emerging opportunities and prepare workers for future career transitions.
“This move aims to provide a one-stop service for job seekers so that they can come to e2i to get career guidance, upskill or learn new skills, and also find good jobs with employer partners.
“As we value add to a job seeker’s overall experience, we also ensure that employers have access to qualified and skilled talents. This is one way that both businesses and workers can prosper and thrive together,” NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng said.
