The 60th National Convention of the Philippines of PMAP (People Management Association of the Philippines) is currently underway in Lahug, Cebu City. The convention is focused on the topic of over-managing and under-leading and how to create a more supportive and productive workplace environment.
One of the speakers at the convention is Roberto F. Antonio, who was the national president of PMAP in 2014. Antonio argued that many managers tend to over-plan, over-organize, and over-control, and that this can lead to a number of problems, including employee dissatisfaction, decreased productivity, and increased turnover.
Antonio also argued that many managers are Theory X in their leadership styles, meaning that they believe that employees are inherently lazy and need to be closely supervised. He contrasted this with Theory Y and Theory Z leadership styles, which are based on the belief that employees are motivated and capable of self-direction.
Antonio believes that HR professionals can play a key role in bridging the gap between Theory X managers and millennial, Gen X, and Gen Z employees. He suggests that HR professionals can help managers develop more effective leadership skills and create a more supportive and productive workplace environment.
