In today’s rapidly evolving workforce, the call for inclusivity and diversity in the workplace has never been stronger. During the pandemic, many workplaces went entirely remote, or into a hybrid work model, which provided increased accessibility to workers with disabilities.

These more flexible work environments have allowed a record number of persons with disabilities to join the workforce and work more comfortably, but there is still much work to be done. One essential tool employers can use is HR technology focused on accommodations and accessibility.

What accessibility for disabled employees means and why it is important

Accessibility for disabled employees embodies the principles of inclusion, diversity, and equal opportunity that all organisations should embrace. It’s not just a checkbox to be ticked off to maintain legal compliance, but an avenue to explore and support the potential of individuals who have been historically marginalised. There are multiple benefits to doing so:

  1. Enhanced productivity: When employees with disabilities have access to the necessary tools and accommodations, they can perform their jobs more effectively.
  2. Diverse perspectives: A diverse workforce, including individuals with disabilities, brings unique perspectives to the table, which leads to more innovative solutions and improved problem-solving.
  3. Attracting top talent: A workplace that is known for its commitment to accessibility and inclusion is more likely to attract top talent. Potential employees are more likely to choose a company that values diversity and inclusion.
  4. Legal compliance: While legal considerations should not be the sole motivator, it is essential to ensure compliance with anti-discrimination laws.

Potential barriers to providing accessibility in both remote and in-person workplaces

  1. Physical barriers: In an onsite workplace, employers must invest in infrastructure that makes the workplace accessible, and provide effective alternatives for their employees who may not be able to work onsite.
  2. Technological barriers: Even as remote work opens the door for new opportunities, inaccessible digital platforms and software pose a significant challenge. We create tools based on our lived experience, and many of the tools we use on a daily basis were not created with various disabilities in mind. For example, how would a person with limited sight or hearing navigate your virtual conferencing platform of choice?
  3. Lack of awareness: Employers and employees may lack awareness about the needs and rights of disabled workers, making it harder to implement effective accommodations.

The tech-enabled HR tools that can enable comprehensive accommodations

HR technology has made significant strides in addressing these challenges, ensuring that workers with disabilities have the support they need.

  1. Assistive technology: These are software and hardware tools specifically designed to aid individuals with disabilities in their work. Screen readers, voice recognition software, and ergonomic peripherals are a few examples.
  2. Digital accessibility testing tools: These tools help organisations identify and rectify accessibility issues in their digital content, ensuring that websites, apps, and documents are usable by all.
  3. Workflow customisation: Many HR systems now offer customisable digital workspaces that can be tailored to individual needs, from font size and colour schemes to keyboard shortcuts.
  4. Communication tools: In remote work settings, video conferencing platforms with built-in closed captioning and real-time transcription of speech can make virtual meetings more accessible.

With the help of these tech-enabled HR tools, companies can pave the way for a more inclusive and accessible workforce, where every employee can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
