The Indonesian government has adopted a partial work-from-home policy for employees in local governments, state-owned enterprises, and municipally-owned companies in Jakarta and the surrounding area.
The policy was announced by Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian on Wednesday, and aimed to reduce vehicle emissions and mitigate air pollution in the capital city.
Under the new policy, employees will be required to work from home for half of the week, alternating with on-site work. Employees directly involved in providing public services are exempt from the policy.
The move comes after Jakarta was recently ranked as the world’s most polluted major city by air monitoring firm IQAir. The government hopes that the work-from-home policy will help to reduce air pollution in Jakarta by 20%.
